With the recently unveiled iPhone 5C being released in the UK tomorrow, we compare this colourful iOS 7 smart phone to another brightly coloured device from the Nokia Lumia range, namely the Nokia Lumia 520, a Windows Phone 8 device and a likewise budget friendly version of the companies flagship device, which in Nokia’s case is the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Operating Platform
When it comes to the operating system you’re either a Windows fan or an avid fan of Apple’s iOS platform and Apple enthusiasts are no doubt excited about the new look operating system which went Live 5PM London time yesterday. Due to high demand it has meant that some have had to wait a little longer then others to successfully download and install the new iOS 7 software on compatible devices. Thankfully those seeking to purchase the new iPhone 5C wont have this problem as it will come with iOS 7 straight out of the box.
Processor
Whilst Apple offer up 1.3 GHz of dual-core processing power for their iPhone 5C model with their A6 chip and 1GB of RAM, the Lumia 520 comes in a close second with a 1 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor but almost half the RAM at 512MB.
Display
The iPhone 5C offers the better touch screen too with its 4 inch Retina 1136 x 640 p display boasting 326 ppi pixels per inch versus the Lumia 520′s 4 inch IPS 800 x 480 p LCD display with a pixel density of just 235 ppi by comparison.
Camera
As for the camera, the Nokia Lumia 520 has been outdone again using a 5 mega pixel camera with 720p video capture in comparison to the iPhone 5C’s 8 mega pixel iSight camera with LED flash and 1080 p HD video capture @ 30 frames per second. The Apple iPhone 5C also has a 1.2 MP FaceTime camera whereas the Lumia 520 lacks a front facing camera altogether.
Memory
In terms of physical storage though, the Lumia handset does have the upper hand despite only offering 8 GB of internal storage capacity, as it has a microSD card slot for additional expansion of up to 64 GB plus 7 GB of Free Microsoft SkyDrive memory, whereas the iPhone 5C doesn’t have this option although you can choose between 16 or 32 GB base models.
Battery
Whilst the iPhone 5C is fitted with a non-removable Li-Po 1510 mAh battery that will give up to 250 hours on standby (3G) the Lumia uses a Li-Ion 1430 mAh battery which will provide a more impressive 390 hours on standby (3G) despite being smaller in size, requiring less charging and users have the added advantage of being able to carry a backup battery if desired.
Dimensions & Weight
The Nokia Lumia 520 is the lighter of the two weighing in at 124 g in comparison to 132 g that the iPhone 5C weighs in at. When it comes to size though the iPhone 5C is slightly slimmer and thinner but also taller measuring 124.4 x 59.2 x 9 mm compared to the Lumia’s 119.9 x 64 x 9.9 mm measurements.
Initial Thoughts
Although the Apple iPhone 5C has the higher specification on paper as you might expect, another key consideration is the price and the iPhone is considerably more expensive than it’s rival! If price is a concern then the Nokia Lumia 520 would be the better option by far as a true compact budget smart phone and the most affordable Windows Phone 8 handset it wont break the bank.
