Over the last few months, there has been plenty of speculation about which iPhone model will be the next to be released. We have recently seen plenty of rumours online which suggests that a new iPhone 6 model, an upgraded iPhone 5S or even a new budget addition of the iPhone will be the next to hit the market, with the latter being aimed specifically at emerging markets.

Tech Radar has recently reported on news which would suggest that the budget iPhone model will be entering production in the near future. The website reports that Pegatron, which is one of Apple’s key manufacturing partners in China is in the process of taking on 40,000 additional members of staff, adding 40% to its current workforce. The website reports that by increasing its staffing levels to around 140,000 personnel it could point to a large scale manufacturing operation for a new iPhone model taking place imminently.

Recent rumours have suggested that a budget iPhone model would be aimed specifically at developing markets such as India, Brazil and China. The combination of their high populations and increasing demand for more affordable smartphone models would mean that Apple can expect to sell many millions of handsets in such markets, which could explain the sudden increase in staffing levels at Pegatron. The website reports that the chief financial officer of the company has neither confirmed nor denied that production of a budget iPhone is about to take place, but suggests that mounting evidence points to this being the case. Of course, a number of other manufacturers are currently taking advantage of such markets. For example, Samsung sells huge volumes of its more affordable Android smartphone models in emerging markets, with others such as Nokia releasing affordable new models in such countries. This demonstrates that developing markets are becoming an increasingly important revenue stream for manufacturers, given the increasing levels of competition and high stakes associated with releasing high-end models in developed western markets. With lower production costs and higher sales volumes, launching a budget iPhone model in these markets would of course give Apple an opportunity to increase its market share.

It is likely that we will hear many more rumours about upcoming iPhone models in the near future, so we will of course report back if we hear of any updates.
